Wine Glass - Wine Glasses
A wine glass is a type of glass stemware used for drinking and tasting all types of wine and is composed of three parts: the stem, bowl and foot. At an event, it is considered very formal and appropriate to serve wine in a glass. Depending on the event, a wine glass could be made of plastic or glass and made in any color or design. Wine glasses can be very decorative depending on the theme and design of the event. There are different types of wine glasses meant to hold the different varieties of wine including:
It is incredibly important to select the appropriate wine glass for the wine style as it can affect the perception and taste. The proper glass helps that particular wine style to breathe and mature so that you have the best possible experience while enjoying the wine. Red wine is usually served in a tall wide bowled glass. The Bordeaux glass has a large bowl and is meant to direct red wines such as a Cabernet and Merlot to the back of one’s mouth. The burgundy glass is wider than the Bordeaux glass and directs red wines such as Pinot Noir to the tip of the tongue. These glasses allow the maximum amount of air to penetrate the wine.
Champagne is usually served in a champagne glass or flute, which has a tall stem and a narrow bowl. The champagne flute is meant to preserve the carbonation of the champagne. White wine glasses have narrower bowls than red wine glasses but are still larger than champagne flutes. White wine should always be served chilled and the shape of the white wine glass is meant to preserve the refrigerated chilled temperature for as long as possible. It is customary to hold all wine glasses by their stem instead of the bowl to prevent the wine from rapidly changing temperatures due to the temperature of one’s hand. Holding the wine glass by the stem also prevents the fingerprints from smearing the glass and makes it easier for guests to swirl the wine, which brings out the intensity of flavor.
A goblet can be used to drink wine as well. A goblet is a deep bowled glass with a stem and no handle. The goblet could also be used to drink water (water goblet) and can be made of wood, glass, brass or stone.
