Sub Floor

A sub floor is a floor covering installed at an event in a particular space to create a different effect. Once the sub floor is installed it becomes the actual floor that guests walk on and they should not be able to see the different between the two. If installed improperly the sub floor could be a hazard because guests could trip and fall over the parts that have not been properly secured. The use of sub floors in the event planning industry are a very common practice and allow event planners a lot of creativity. Event planners use sub floors to:

  • create a different décor
  • create a set
  • conceal stains
  • prevent slipping
  • set up a dance surface
  • raise the floor level

Examples of a sub floor could be:

  • Hay
  • Sand
  • Red Carpet
  • Wooden Dance Floor
  • Grass
  • Gravel and Rocks
  • Mats

If an event planner is planning a beach party themed wrap party for a television show, they might want to bring in sand so that people will feel as though they are on the beach. The sand would then act as a sub floor. A dance floor is a sub floor because it is not the original floor in the venue. If an event planner has to install another surface for guests to walk on then it is a sub floor. The red carpet (used for events such as the Oscars) is considered a sub floor because it covers concrete, stone or another type of carpet. A sub floor is a perfect way to alter the feeling of a venue and further the effect of the décor.
