A punch bowl is a large deep bowl used to serve a large quantity of people during an event. The punch bowl is usually filled with a variety of punch flavors, lemonade or iced tea. To elaborate “punch” is simply a drink made up of juice, concentrates, soda, ice and sometimes sherbet. While it is usually a non alcoholic drink it can be “spiked” with alcohol for adult events.
Whether it contains alcohol or not, punch is a very festive drink perfect for any event. Punch can be made in any variety and is usually left up to the caterer or cook in terms of how they want to prepare it. Guests can serve themselves from the punch bowl with a ladle or wait to be served by an attendant. The punch bowl is usually pretty decorative and can be bought in glass, wood or stainless steel although the most common punch bowls are made of glass. The punch bowl is kept uncovered so that ingredients can be added or refilled as necessary. It is appropriate to provide a ladle with the punch bowl for sanitary reasons. If guests have to dip cups into the punch bowl you risk them making a mess, reusing dirty cups and accidentally dipping their fingers into the punch bowl.
A ladle is simply a long handled spoon with a deep cup and acts as both a stirrer and a serving piece. It can be made of metal, glass, plastic or wood and ensures that the punch remains uncontaminated. The ladle is perfect for mixing punch when the ingredients have settled to the bottom of the bowl.
