Platter - Platters

A platter is a large or moderately large silver, plastic, aluminum, bronze or gold plate designed to hold a large amount of food for serving during an event. The material of the platter is central when determining the level of formality at an event. If you are serving a formal sit down dinner in the Beverly Hills Hotel, you would not use a plastic serving platter to serve guests. A platter can have handles which makes it more of a tray but it still serves the same purpose. The difference between a platter and a tray is that the food is placed directly on the surface of the platter instead of a plate. You could use platters for items such as:

  • Sliced Turkey
  • Sliced Ham
  • Mozzarella, Tomato and Basil Salad
  • Bruschetta

A waiter would hold the platter just as they would a waiter’s tray but the platter would be accompanied by a serving utensil so that each guest could receive a proper portion. The platter, as with any other serving tool, allows the wait staff to be more effective because more guests can be served in one trip from the kitchen. Platters come in a variety of sizes depending on the type of food you are serving and the amount of guests who need to be served. Platters can also be found in a variety of styles and designs to meet the needs of any event.
