Muddle - Muddling

In the event planning industry, or even more specifically, the beverage industry, a muddle is a device used to mix alcoholic drinks. A muddle is simply a thick stick with a rounded end made of stone, wood, glass or plastic used to combine ingredients in the bottom of a glass. The process of muddling requires the bartender to bruise and press to release the oils and juices of the herb or fruit. The best way to describe a muddle is as a miniature baseball bat with a flat thin end used for mixing. Muddles allow the bartender to both smash and mix the contents of an alcoholic drink to add flavor, texture and color. A muddle is used for drinks such as a:

  • Mojito
  • Old Fashioned
  • Caipirinha
  • Fruit infused cocktails
  • Mint Julep
A muddle is most typically used for making alcoholic drinks can really make the difference in a drink. In the case of a mojito, the purpose of the muddle is to extract the oils from the mint leaves so that it mixes properly with the sugar and club soda. Muddling helps to enhance the flavor of a drink and is usually the first step in the drink making process for drinks that do combine solids and liquids because it releases the necessary flavors and colors. You could use a muddle to smash raspberries or peaches to make a champagne cocktail which would be an interesting, fresh addition to any brunch. Not only would the champagne cocktail contain juicy pieces of raspberries but would emit a berry hue as well. Bartenders should shy away from smashing or grinding ingredients. The objective is to bruise the items to obtain maximum flavor and to avoid pieces of herbs or fruit from floating in drinks. This can cause the drink to appear messy and unappetizing.
