Greeter

A greeter is the individual who, at an event, is assigned to welcome guests to the event. They are usually stationed in the front of the event to direct the guests either to the registration tables or the event room itself. Greeters are helpful because they reassure guests of where they are supposed to be. If your event is being held in a confusing space then it is helpful to have a greeter standing by to say hello, “How are you, are you here for such and such event…” The greeter could be your guests’ first contact if that is your wish and therefore should be a friendly face. The greeter should be able to answer basic questions, such as to name a few:

  • Where is the bathroom?
  • What time is the food being served?
  • Where is the event being held?
  • Do you have a coat check?
  • Where is the bar?

If the greeter does not know the answers to these questions, then they should have access to the answer. The greeter can also be the person to monitor the flow of the arrivals. If last minute items are still being prepared, it might be helpful to know that your guests are starting to arrive. You can always opt to have more than one greeter. This is especially helpful in a place that can be a bit confusing. It is also nice to have more than one greeter at a branding event.

The greeters can serve as opportunities for marketing. It might be interesting to allow one greeter to hand out champagne and another to hand out drink tickets as the guests are passing. The greeter has the opportunity to get your guests excited about your event. If your event has a scheduled show complete with entertainment and speakers, the greeters can hand them out. Greeters can also help at the end of the event by handing out gift bags and directing people to the valet or the parking lot. The basic idea is for the greeters to provide friendly service and assure the guests that they are in the correct place.
