Theme
In the event planning industry, the theme is the central idea in which the event’s décor is based upon. The word theme, in relation to the event planning industry, impacts every aspect of the event’s décor from the:
- Lighting
- Menu selection
- Entertainment options
- Colors
- Centerpieces
- Floral design
- Sound
The lighting of a venue for an event is related to the theme but doesn’t take on a theme on its own. The lighting would just enhance the anticipated mood that the theme is expected to create. For instance, if you are planning a casino game night then you might want to think about exciting low spotlighting or brightly colored lighting. Every aspect of the event should refer back to your theme so that the entire event makes your guests feel as though they have been transported into another place in time.
If an award dinner has the theme, “a midsummer night’s dream,” guests should expect to see lots of greenery and majestic references to things such as fairies and colors like gold and purple.
Having a harpist to play at the event would add to the soothing climate already created by the other chosen décor. If a holiday party is centered upon a “red” theme then every aspect of the décor should be a variation of reddish hues at the very least. The event planner could take the “red” theme to another level by choosing to serve only red drinks and food. Choosing a theme can be a very difficult thing and is not really required for an event, as a matter of fact, an event could turn out beautifully without one. The chosen theme of an event usually has something to do with either:
- The time of year in which the event is held
- Company association
- The reason for the event
- A specific place
- A holiday
Examples of some themes are:
- Western
- Luau
- Beach Party
- Spanish
- Mexican
- Jamaican
- American
