Picnics and Barbeques
A picnic is a very informal social gathering held in the spring or summer usually in a park or other outdoor recreational center complete with games and activities for adults and/or children. A barbeque is similar to a picnic in the fact that it is usually held outdoors but the selection of food would be more of a complete hot meal instead of just cold finger foods. At a traditional picnic, guests would sit on blankets in the grass while enjoying food from a “picnic basket” such as cold sandwiches, drinks, deviled eggs, chips and other finger foods. In the event planning industry, event planners often plan company picnics to reward employee dedication or to conduct team building activities. Barbeques are also often held for the same reason and offer foods such as grilled chicken, ribs, corn on the cob and popcorn for example.
Company picnics and barbeques often plan many activities and games for adults and children because it often turns into a family event. Picnics and barbeques are held most often in the spring and summer when the children of employees are out of school, so they are often times invited as well. Some companies think bonding is important and feel one way to do that is to get to know each other’s families. Activities include things such as:
- Face painting
- Raffle games
- Water games
- Inflatable items like moonwalkers
- Egg toss
- Sack races
Guests usually arrive at a picnic or barbeque dressed comfortably in jeans, shorts and tennis shoes so that they can enjoy every aspect of the event. Event planners approach these events in the same manner as they would any other event. They begin by gathering all the pertinent information such as:
- Number of people
- Date of Event
- Location, if known
- Reason for event
After this information has been covered, the event planner can begin to choose the food items and calculate the costs per person. Both a picnic and barbeque are supposed to be incredibly fun occasions and can be decorated in a particular theme such as:
- Luau
- International
- Country Fair
- Jamaican
- Circus
- Beach Party
- Western
