Menu - Menus
A menu is the list of chosen food items to be served at an event. A menu is usually present to guests at the beginning of an event so they will know what they are going to be served or so they can think about what they want so that they will be ready to inform the waiter when he comes to take their order. A menu is helpful in that it provides guests will a rundown of the meal but it also helps the kitchen staff as well. The menu should list by course what is being served. This list will help waiters who were unfamiliar with what was being served and will hopefully prevent the culinary staff from forgetting main ingredients needed for cooking.
A menu itself is usually printed on a single piece of paper (could be laminated) in the order that the food will be served. For example, the soup would be listed before the dessert. In a restaurant, the menu is usually printed on multiple sides and could be contained in a booklet of some sort. For a single event, the menu is usually simpler as there are a limited number of choices. A menu could also be printed on table tents or displayed on the actual buffet table in front of the entrée. You could supply menus for a buffet setup but because your guests can see the items being served it isn’t very necessary. A menu should list all choices including:
- Salads
- Meats
- Soups
- Vegetables
- Desserts
- Appetizers
A menu should also contain a very short explanation of the food item especially if it is not listed in the title. Writing a short description of the food item will help your guests to make their food selections as people have very different tastes. If you are serving a very spicy dish or one with a lot of dairy products then it is a good idea to specifically note this for your guests with dietary restrictions.
