Luncheon - Luncheons
A luncheon is a semi-formal lunch meeting or social activity, held anytime between the hours of 11-4pm, where food is served. Luncheons are usually held to:
- discuss an issue
- celebrate an occasion
- raise money
- give out awards
Luncheons can be held in a banquet room, a house, a church event room, an office conference room, a hotel or any other space that will hold your anticipated number of guests. A luncheon usually has a speaker, a panel or another important topic to discuss, so they do not last longer than about three hours because their guests would lose interest. A luncheon is basically a meeting in a relaxed setting with food. Luncheons are usually held by a company, social group, business owner or anyone else who has a reason to have a semi-formal gathering. Again, a luncheon is held between the hours of 11-4pm, which makes it less formal than an evening event. This means the décor might not be as plush and guests won’t be expected to wear formal attire, although there will still be a dress code. Guests are usually served a full meal either by sit down service or a buffet depending on the occasion. In a sit down situation, guests should have the choice of one of two meals and a dessert. In a buffet situation, there could be action stations or just a buffet line (or two depending on the number of people).
A luncheon will usually have some sort of speaker to lead the program as its purpose is very clearly defined. A luncheon is usually not thrown for the sheer enjoyment of the guests as a holiday or a cocktail party is. There usually isn’t any dancing or even a full bar service. This is because a luncheon has a specific purpose and do not last too long. A luncheon usually hires a musician to supply background music, if there is any music at all, but it is by no means the main attraction of the event. A luncheon is a very social gathering but is deeply rooted in business. A company could hold a luncheon for their employees to acknowledge employee dedication, or celebrate the anniversary of some occasion. Ebony Magazine holds a fashion show every year in acknowledgement of the first Ebony Fashion Show held about twenty years ago. If a company is holding a charity function, they could hold a luncheon for a raffle or to kick off the festivities.
