Glossary of Event Planning Terms - S

Salt/Pepper Shakers Containers that hold salt, pepper or any other spice. These containers can be decorated in any fashion and made of any material such as wood, metal, glass or plastic and can be found in a kitchen or a table for guests to add seasoning to their food as they see fit.
Saute' Food that is cooked in a pan with butter or oil.
Seating Arrangements Pre-assigned seating organized by the event planner and/or host that determines where each guest will be sitting and at which table.
Serpentine Tables Curved banquet tables which can be linked together to create unusually creative table designs. Tables can be made into a semi-circle, s-shape, etc… These tables can be used for eating and creating interesting seating arrangements, to hold gift bags or any other purpose at an event.
Serving Bowl A bowl used by the catering servers to serve food out of. A serving bowl can be used for soup, salad or large quantities of food items at a serving station.
Serving Pieces Larger utensils such as a fork, spoon and knife used for serving food.
Sit down A meal in which guests receive all of their courses at their table. Sit downs usually take longer because servers have to wait until the majority of persons is finished eating before they can bring another course.
Site Visit - Site Survey A visit to the venue before the event necessary for planning.
Soup Spoons A spoon with a deeper middle used to eat soup. The spoon makes it easier to get more liquid onto the spoon at one time.
Space Heater A space heater is a portable heater that uses natural gas to heat an outdoor area. It can be turned on and off at ones leisure and is typically used at events to heat an outdoor area where guests are expected to gather.
Stage  An often elevated area where the program or entertainment of the event takes place.
Step and Repeat Marks on a red carpet relating to places or stations each person on the red carpet must stop to give an interview or take a picture. This setup gives a moment of perceived intimacy for the person to be photographed or interviewed. It also helps the process stay organized and move smoothly.
Sterno A container that can be lit and used under the chaffing disk to keep the food hot.
Stirrer A thin wooden or plastic stick used to mix the contents of a drink.
Sub Floor A floor covering used to convert a space for a different use or to create a different effect.
Swagging the creative draping of decorative or colored fabrics for decoration. Fabrics are usually hung from a tent or on a metal frame to help conceal the outline of a tent or canopy.
