Color Wash

A color wash is a technique usually utilized by lighting design professionals. A color wash is when colored light is used to create ambience. Color wash basically casts a particular hue of color on everything in the venue. This can look really spectacular especially when the event is being held in a low light situation. A color wash could be done in a venue to complement the logo of the company, to match the décor or make an impact on the theme.

If a company’s logo is red and blue it could be interesting to have certain parts of the room lit with a blue light and the other parts lit with a red light. For instance, the food tables could be lit with a red light and then a blue hue could be cast throughout the room itself. If you are hosting a holiday party where the colors are red and gold then maybe you could color wash the room in red because gold or yellow might be too bright. If you are hosting a midsummer night’s dream party, colors like purple and green would look beautiful in any venue.

Color washing should be done by a lighting professional and usually includes putting a colored screen in front of a ceiling light so that when the white light filters through the screen it becomes a different color which is then reflected all over the room. Color washing is a great technique to incorporate into the décor scheme of a venue because it can immediately bring a new feel and ambience to the room.
