Cake Knife - Cake Server

A cake knife is a blunt end knife with a wide blade used to cut through layers of cake and then serve the slice. The cake knife’s wide blade is used for balancing the piece of cake that was just cut. The knife is slid underneath the bottom of the cake and balanced on the blade in order to serve it. The cake knife is appropriate to use when cutting a cake such as a wedding cake because the whole point is to maintain the structure of the cake itself. A cake is much more appetizing if it hasn’t been hacked into.

The cake knife makes serving easier and faster especially when there is a large amount of guests. The server can simply cut and serve all in one sweeping motion instead of cutting and then using a different utensil to serve.


The cake knife can come in a variety of styles from the very plain to the incredibly ornate. The cake knife is usually in line with the style of all other formal eating utensils and should always be used to cut a cake if you want it to remain in some sort of order. A cake knife is most effective for cutting a moist layer cake rather than a cake such as a fruit cake because it has a blunt end. The cake should be something that can be cut easily and balanced on top of the knife for serving. The cake should be placed on an appropriate sized plate- such as a dessert plate for eating.
