Bread Basket - Bread Baskets

The bread basket is a wicker basket full of bread to be served at an event. The bread basket is usually placed on the dining table by the wait staff, either before the guests are seated or immediately after. The bread basket is usually accompanied by either the butter dish or in the case of an Italian themed event, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The bread could already be buttered before it is placed into the basket depending on the preference of the caterer. In being sensitive to the dietary restrictions and diets of some guests, some caterers prefer the guests to control the amount of butter they consume.

The bread basket itself is usually made of wicker and is always lined with paper or a piece of cloth similar to a cloth napkin. The napkin is used to keep the bread hot and covered before and during serving. The napkin also protects the bread from being breathed on and handled by a lot of people (for sanitary reasons). If an event is being held outside, the napkin prevents insects from landing on the bread. The napkin itself is usually a neutral color such as an ivory or white but can be more festive to match the color of the décor.

The actual food items in the bread basket could be served to guests one of two ways. The bread could either be served by the wait staff or by the guests themselves. The bread basket is usually placed on each table so that guests can help themselves and is refilled when it becomes empty. During a sit down event, people usually want something to munch on before the meal and the bread in the basket is the perfect thing. A bread basket can contain items such as:

    • Rolls
    • Croissants
    • Biscuits
    • Donuts
    • Muffins
    • Cornbread
    • Flatbread
    • French bread
    • Baguette pieces
