Appetizers are small food dishes served before the actual entrée or meal at an event. At a cocktail party or reception, appetizers are the only food that is served. Appetizers can also be called hors d’oeuvres or canapés and can be served one of two ways:

  • Tray passed by a server
  • As a buffet

Appetizers are usually dominant in taste, such as sweet, spicy or salty and can exude a range of formality. Depending on the event options of appetizers range from beef nachos to cream cheese filled tomatoes to caviar served on crackers. Appetizers are usually small in size in order to be easily consumed in one or two bites. They usually consist of a meat such as fish, beef or chicken along with a bread or vegetable although; they readily omit one or the other. Examples of appetizers, to name a very small few are:

  • Shrimp Cocktail
  • Thai Spring Rolls
  • Bruschetta
  • Chicken or Beef Skewers
  • Turkey Meatballs with dipping sauce
  • Beef Quesadillas
  • Mini Chinese Chicken Salads

Appetizers are basically “little bites” of food for guests to eat while enjoying a beverage. Appetizers can be offered to temper one’s appetite until the main course arrives, or they can be more substantial if that is the only food being served.
