A La Mode
A la Mode is a French phrase which denotes to the receiver that ice cream or an ice cream substitute will be served on top of a dessert. An ice cream substitute is a good thing to consider because of the wide range of dietary needs at any particular event. It is always a good idea to offer other options, considering a lot of people are lactose intolerant and should not be left out because of this restriction. Substitutes can be:
- Sorbet
- Sherbert
- Frozen Yogurt
- Soy Cream
- Tofutti Cream
- Whipped Cream
An a la mode option is usually given with rich desserts such as brownies, pies, cobblers and cake. The combination is especially good if the dessert is served warm with the ice cream on top or even on the side. This combination tends to “complete” the dessert and is very satisfying. The ice cream or substitute is usually a flavor that works well with any dessert, such as vanilla. Vanilla is a very basic flavor and compliments most desserts, however chocolate or variations of vanilla could be used such as French vanilla. The phrase “a la mode” could also be used to refer to any dish that is served with an accompanying topping such as:
- Steak with garlic mashed potatoes
- Mashed potatoes with gravy
- Chili with scallions and cheese
